What's happening
This bill requires all employees providing respite care for people with mental illness or developmental disabilities to be certified in first aid and CPR/AED.
Why it matters
Elevates safety standards for vulnerable populations. By mandating first aid and CPR/AED certification, the bill aims to ensure that employees working with individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities can respond effectively to medical emergencies, potentially reducing risks of harm or fatality.
Reduces financial barriers for workers. Since the cost of certification and training is covered by the department, employees are not personally burdened with extra expenses, making compliance more accessible and equitable.
Creates a uniform expectation statewide. The bill requires consistent training for all respite care providers, helping to standardize care quality and emergency preparedness across different facilities and services.
Delegates regulatory authority for smooth implementation. By instructing offices to develop necessary rules and regulations, the bill allows for tailored guidance and oversight, helping agencies address practical challenges and ensure the law’s effectiveness.
