What's happening
This bill allows local governments to increase the amount of disability pension income excluded when qualifying seniors for property tax exemptions.
Why it matters
Enables local governments to more generously exclude disability pension or benefit income when seniors apply for property tax relief, which could increase the number of older adults who qualify for this exemption.
Raises the potential exclusion cap from $3,000 up to $15,000, giving municipalities flexibility to set higher limits based on local needs and cost of living.
May help seniors with disabilities who rely on disability income to better afford to stay in their homes, potentially reducing financial stress and risk of displacement.
Shifts some decision-making power to local authorities, allowing communities to tailor property tax exemption policies to better address their own senior populations’ circumstances.
