What's happening

The bill raises the allowable percentage of farm waste electric generation on a local feeder line from 20% to 25%.

Why it matters

  1. Supports expanded renewable energy from farms. By raising the cap from 20% to 25%, the bill allows more electricity generated from farm waste (like manure or crop residue) to be fed into local power lines, encouraging more on-farm renewable energy projects.

  2. Potential for greater rural economic benefits. Increasing the cap could enable more farms to participate in electricity generation, potentially providing them with additional income streams and supporting local economies.

  3. Impacts local grid management. Allowing a higher percentage of farm-generated electricity on feeder lines may require utilities to implement new safety or reliability measures, as more distributed generation can affect grid stability.

  4. Encourages innovation in agricultural waste management. With a higher threshold, farms may have more incentive to invest in technology that turns waste into energy, helping to address environmental concerns related to farm waste disposal.
