What's happening
This bill requires a study on adjusting the earned income tax credit to offset public benefit losses from increased employment.
Why it matters
Addresses the “benefits cliff” problem. The study aims to find ways to prevent low-income workers from losing more in public benefits than they gain from increased earnings, ensuring work is always financially rewarding.
Could influence future policy changes. The findings may be used to reshape the earned income tax credit (EITC) to better support working families and individuals who are at risk of losing vital assistance as their incomes rise.
Affects recipients of multiple public benefits. By coordinating across tax, health, and social service agencies, the study considers how various types of assistance (like Medicaid, SNAP, etc.) interact with tax credits, potentially leading to more comprehensive reforms.
May improve economic mobility. If enacted, the resulting policy changes could reduce disincentives to work, helping more people move out of poverty by ensuring increased employment always leads to higher net income.
