What's happening

This bill allows the Department of Education to share fingerprints and criminal history records of cleared prospective child care employees with the Office of Children and Family Services, eliminating duplicate fingerprinting.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces redundant fingerprinting and background checks. for individuals seeking employment in both educational and child care settings, streamlining the hiring process and saving time for both applicants and agencies.

  2. Improves interagency cooperation and data sharing. by allowing the Department of Education to transmit fingerprints and criminal history records directly to the Office of Children and Family Services, leading to more efficient and coordinated background checks.

  3. Enhances ongoing oversight. by authorizing the Division of Criminal Justice Services to send any future criminal history updates directly to child care regulators, helping ensure that cleared employees remain suitable for work with children.

  4. Potentially lowers administrative costs. for child care centers and applicants who would otherwise pay for multiple fingerprint submissions, making it easier for qualified individuals to move between education and child care roles.
