What's happening

This bill designates the "honor and remember" flag as New York's official symbol honoring fallen armed forces members and requires its display at the state capitol.

Why it matters

  1. Symbolic recognition. By officially designating the "honor and remember" flag, New York is creating a visible, unified symbol to publicly recognize and honor service members who died in the line of duty—a signal of ongoing respect and remembrance that may be meaningful to families, veterans, and the broader public.

  2. Government responsibility. The bill tasks the Commissioner of General Services with procuring and distributing the flag, ensuring that this act of remembrance is not just symbolic but also operationalized, showing governmental commitment to honoring fallen service members.

  3. Increased visibility and awareness. Mandating display of the flag at the state capitol during legislative sessions and public occasions means that thousands of visitors and legislators will see it regularly, raising awareness of military sacrifice and potentially fostering a culture of remembrance throughout the state.
