What's happening
This bill provides free lifetime hunting and fishing licenses to honorably discharged, disabled veterans with a 40% or greater service-connected disability in New York.
Why it matters
Increases recognition and support for disabled veterans by offering a tangible benefit (free lifetime hunting and fishing licenses), which may help improve quality of life and honor their service.
Reduces ongoing financial barriers for disabled veterans who want to participate in outdoor and recreational activities, potentially supporting their physical and mental health.
May encourage greater engagement in outdoor traditions among veterans, building community connections and reinforcing inclusivity in state programs.
Could lead to a minor reduction in state revenue from license sales, but demonstrates a policy choice to prioritize veteran benefits over these funds.
