What's happening
This bill requires New York State to create and maintain a public, regularly updated registry of mental hygiene and child supervision residential facilities.
Why it matters
Increases transparency and public awareness. by requiring regular, public updates of residential facilities serving vulnerable populations, enabling families, advocates, and community members to know where such facilities are located and who operates them.
Improves oversight and accountability. by mandating that multiple state agencies (related to children, mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse) coordinate and provide updated facility information, potentially making it harder for unsafe or unlicensed facilities to operate unnoticed.
Facilitates better access to services and informed choices. for individuals and families seeking residential care, as the registry provides a centralized, accessible resource to compare and locate facilities statewide.
Supports legislative and policy decisions. by requiring the registry to be sent to the legislature twice a year, equipping lawmakers with up-to-date data for oversight, funding, or regulatory actions.
