What's happening

This bill requires all gun owners in New York to securely store rifles, shotguns, and firearms, expanding safe storage requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Broader safe storage rules. The bill expands safe storage requirements to all gun owners, regardless of whether they live with someone prohibited from possessing firearms, aiming to prevent unauthorized access by anyone, including children or burglars.

  2. Potential for increased enforcement. By removing exceptions and specific references to federal prohibitions or timing of convictions, more gun owners may be held accountable for unsafe storage, potentially leading to more prosecutions and a stronger deterrent effect.

  3. Uniform statewide standard. The legislation creates a single, clear rule for safe storage across New York, though it still allows localities to enact stricter requirements, possibly reducing confusion and patchwork enforcement.

  4. Public safety rationale. Supporters argue that requiring secure storage for all firearms could help reduce accidental shootings, firearm theft, and misuse—especially in households with children or vulnerable individuals.
