What's happening
This bill allows municipalities to issue temporary handicapped parking permits to pregnant women, valid until the end of pregnancy.
Why it matters
Expands accessibility for pregnant women. by allowing them to park in designated handicapped spaces during pregnancy, acknowledging the physical challenges pregnancy can present, especially in later stages or high-risk cases.
Provides statewide recognition of temporary permits. , meaning pregnant women can use these permits anywhere in New York, not just in their home municipality, ensuring consistent access to closer parking statewide.
Requires physician certification. for eligibility, which helps prevent misuse and ensures that only those with a medical need (i.e., verified pregnancy) get temporary access to these permits.
Establishes clear legal standing and enforcement. by updating violation language to include pregnant women with permits, making it clear that unauthorized use is still subject to penalties and that pregnant permit holders are protected under the law.
