What's happening
This bill bans the transportation or shipment of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) waste products into New York State for treatment, disposal, or storage.
Why it matters
Prevents out-of-state fracking waste from entering New York. By banning the shipment and transportation of hydraulic fracturing waste into New York, the bill aims to stop the state from becoming a dumping ground for waste produced by fracking operations in other regions.
Reduces potential environmental and public health risks. Fracking waste can contain hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials. This law seeks to protect New York’s water supplies, soil, and air quality from contamination linked to the storage, treatment, or disposal of such waste.
Signals strong opposition to fracking and its byproducts. Even though high-volume fracking is already banned in New York, this legislation further reinforces the state’s stance by closing any loopholes that would allow fracking waste to be imported, treated, or disposed of within state borders.
