What's happening

This bill allows New York vehicle owners to pay an annual fee to use only one rear license plate, with fees supporting emergency services.

Why it matters

  1. Offers vehicle owners more flexibility and personalization. by allowing them to choose a single rear license plate option if they prefer, for an annual fee, potentially appealing to those concerned with aesthetics, vehicle modifications, or front plate installation challenges.

  2. Generates new, dedicated funding for emergency services. specifically, all collected fees go directly to the New York State Wireless Telephone Emergency Account, supporting 911 and emergency response infrastructure, which could improve public safety for all residents.

  3. Establishes a precedent for redefining "license plates" in state law. , ensuring that references to "plates" will be interpreted to include this new one-plate option, which may influence future vehicle registration and enforcement practices.

Who cares

  • Vehicle registration applicants

The bill would let them pay an additional $50 annually to receive one license plate for display only on the rear of their vehicle.

  • Department of Motor Vehicles

The bill would require the agency to issue a single rear plate to applicants who pay the additional annual fee.

  • New York State wireless telephone emergency account administrators

The bill would direct all revenue from the single-plate fee exclusively to that account.
