What's happening

This bill prohibits insurers from raising premiums or placing insureds in the assigned risk plan solely due to accidents during emergency vehicle use.

Why it matters

  1. Protects first responders and others acting in emergencies. from insurance penalties (like premium hikes or forced entry into the assigned risk pool) when accidents occur during official emergency vehicle use, recognizing the risks inherent in public safety work.

  2. Aims to prevent financial disincentives. for police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and similar personnel who might otherwise hesitate to respond to emergencies out of concern for personal insurance consequences.

  3. Limits insurer discretion. by making it unlawful to base negative insurance actions solely on the fact that an accident happened during emergency response, potentially leading to fairer treatment for those serving the public in crisis situations.
