What's happening

This bill creates a Veterans' Gerontological Advisory Committee to advise on policies and services for New York's aging veterans.

Why it matters

  1. Brings specialized expertise to veterans’ aging issues. The committee will include professionals in geriatric medicine, psychiatry, nursing, social work, economics, and eldercare management, ensuring that policy advice is informed by a deep understanding of both aging and veterans’ unique needs.

  2. Prioritizes lived experience and diversity. At least 60% of members must be age 60 or older, and a majority of seats are reserved for veterans themselves, promoting guidance that reflects both professional and personal perspectives on aging as a veteran.

  3. Ensures regular, ongoing input on policy. By requiring at least annual meetings and allowing the director to seek the committee’s advice on a wide range of topics, the bill creates a formal, consistent channel for input into state decisions affecting older veterans.

  4. Reduces barriers to participation. Members serve without salary and are not considered to hold public office, so participation does not interfere with other roles or require official oaths, making it easier for qualified, committed individuals to serve.
