What's happening

This bill allows local governments to extend property tax credits to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers serving neighboring municipalities.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses a gap for cross-border volunteers. Many volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers serve in municipalities other than where they live; this bill enables those individuals to receive property tax credits in their home community, recognizing their service even if it's not within their municipality of residence.

  2. Supports recruitment and retention. By expanding eligibility for tax credits, local governments may find it easier to attract and keep volunteers, which is critically important given ongoing shortages in volunteer emergency personnel across New York State.

  3. Increases local government flexibility. Municipalities are not required, but are authorized, to extend these benefits, allowing them to tailor incentives based on local needs and available resources.

  4. Promotes regional cooperation. The measure acknowledges the interconnected nature of emergency services, where neighboring towns and districts often rely on each other's volunteers, fostering a spirit of regional support and shared responsibility.
