What's happening

This bill allows voters in New York to photograph and share their own ballots and voting process, but prohibits coercion to do so.

Why it matters

  1. Empowers voters by explicitly legalizing "ballot selfies" and public sharing of their voting experience, which could encourage civic engagement and voter turnout, particularly among younger and first-time voters.

  2. Modernizes election law to reflect current social media habits, potentially reducing confusion or accidental lawbreaking by voters who wish to share their participation in elections online.

  3. Maintains voter privacy and ballot secrecy by prohibiting photos that include other voters or reveal anyone else's ballot, helping to prevent intimidation or vote-buying schemes.

  4. Introduces a safeguard against coercion by making it a misdemeanor to force someone to photograph or share their voting process, aiming to protect voters from being pressured or intimidated into publicizing their vote.
