What's happening
This bill requires the State Police superintendent to create and enforce uniform investigatory standards for all police shootings of civilians.
Why it matters
Establishes Consistency. By requiring uniform investigatory standards statewide, the bill aims to ensure that all police shootings of civilians are investigated by the same rules, reducing discrepancies between jurisdictions and potentially increasing public trust.
Limits Local Discretion. The law removes the ability of local police departments to set their own procedures for these investigations, which could address concerns about conflicts of interest or lack of transparency in local investigations.
Creates Clear Accountability. With mandated standards from the State Police superintendent, both law enforcement officers and the public have clearer expectations about how investigations will be conducted, potentially leading to more reliable and equitable outcomes.
Potential for Statewide Data. Uniform procedures could make it easier to collect and compare data on police shootings across New York, supporting analyses that might inform future policy changes or reforms.
