What's happening
This bill requires insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization treatments as part of infertility diagnosis and treatment in New York.
Why it matters
Expands access to fertility care by requiring insurance plans to cover in vitro fertilization (IVF),. which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs for people seeking to conceive through IVF—a treatment often costing tens of thousands of dollars.
Removes previous exclusions that allowed insurers to deny IVF coverage,. addressing a key barrier for many individuals and couples facing infertility, and potentially increasing the number and diversity of people able to pursue parenthood.
May impact employer-sponsored insurance costs and plan designs,. as insurers and employers will need to accommodate the new mandate, possibly influencing premiums or coverage options.
Could set a precedent for broader infertility coverage mandates in other states,. signaling a shift toward recognizing infertility as a health condition requiring comprehensive insurance coverage.
