What's happening
This bill expands third-degree assault to include causing physical injury to transit operators, drivers, passengers, and related personnel.
Why it matters
Expands protections to a broad range of transit-related individuals. The bill makes it a third-degree assault to cause physical injury not only to transit operators and drivers, but also to passengers, school bus drivers, station agents, and ticket agents, recognizing the vulnerability of all these groups during transit operations.
Targets assaults during the performance of duties. The bill specifically covers cases where the operator, driver, or agent is actively performing their job, or when the victim is a passenger, emphasizing enhanced legal consequences for violence that disrupts public transportation or endangers public safety.
Aims to deter attacks and improve safety in public transportation. By elevating the legal consequences for assaulting transit personnel and passengers, the legislation seeks to reduce incidents of violence on public and hired transportation, potentially improving the sense of safety for workers and the traveling public.
