What's happening

This bill requires all New York colleges and universities to install or retrofit sprinkler systems in dormitory buildings by March 1, 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Significantly improves student safety. by mandating automatic sprinkler systems in all dormitories, reducing the risk of fire-related injuries or deaths.

  2. Requires both new construction and retrofitting. of existing dorm buildings, meaning older facilities must also be upgraded to current safety standards—not just new ones.

  3. Establishes a clear deadline (March 1, 2019). for compliance, ensuring that colleges and universities act promptly to address fire safety rather than delaying improvements.

  4. Could result in substantial costs for institutions. especially those with older or larger housing inventories—which may impact budgets, tuition, or campus planning decisions.
