What's happening
This bill increases the notary public fees in New York from two dollars to five dollars for various services.
Why it matters
Direct financial impact on individuals and businesses. The fee increase will make it more expensive for anyone needing notarized documents, which could add up for people handling multiple or frequent transactions (like real estate, legal filings, or small business operations).
Potentially higher earnings for notaries public. Notaries, many of whom operate as small businesses or as part of other service offerings, could see increased revenue, potentially making the role more attractive or helping cover rising business costs.
Possible access implications. Higher fees, though modest, might discourage some individuals—especially those on fixed or low incomes—from seeking notary services when needed, potentially impacting their ability to complete legal or financial transactions.
Reflects updating of fees after decades. The last change to these fees was in 1991; this adjustment may be seen as keeping up with inflation and the cost of living, which could set a precedent for regular reviews of state service fees.
