What's happening

This bill requires East Hampton to adopt a resolution subject to permissive referendum before entering long-term airport grant agreements.

Why it matters

  1. Increases local oversight. By requiring a permissive referendum before entering into long-term grant agreements (10 years or more), the bill gives East Hampton residents a direct way to challenge or approve significant airport-related decisions, making the town board more accountable to the public.

  2. Limits unilateral commitments. The town board cannot unilaterally commit to long-term obligations with state or federal agencies for airport projects, ensuring that major decisions affecting the town's future are more transparent and potentially subject to voter input.

  3. May affect airport funding and operations. The added step could impact the town’s ability to swiftly secure grant funding for airport improvements or operations, which could influence the airport’s development, maintenance, and long-term planning.
