What's happening

This bill provides a 10% property tax exemption for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers in certain New York counties.

Why it matters

  1. Incentivizes volunteer service. By offering a property tax break, the bill aims to attract and retain volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, roles that are often challenging to fill but essential for public safety, especially in areas with limited paid emergency staff.

  2. Targets specific local need. The exemption applies only to counties with populations between 1,339,000 and 1,340,000 (at the time, likely Nassau County), addressing a local recruitment or retention challenge rather than instituting a statewide policy.

  3. Long-term reward for service. Volunteers with over 20 years of service can receive the exemption for life (as long as they remain residents), recognizing and rewarding sustained commitment, which could help keep experienced volunteers engaged in the community.

  4. Safeguards against benefit loss. Existing volunteers receiving similar tax benefits at the time of the law’s enactment will not lose their current exemptions, ensuring no one is disadvantaged by the new provisions.
