What's happening

This bill excludes service awards paid to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers from federal adjusted gross income for tax purposes.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces tax burden for volunteer first responders. By excluding service awards from taxable income, the bill provides a direct financial benefit to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, potentially increasing their take-home pay from these awards.

  2. Encourages volunteerism in critical public safety roles. The tax exemption could serve as an incentive for more individuals to volunteer for fire and ambulance services, helping address shortages and supporting essential emergency services in local communities.

  3. Recognizes and values community service. The legislation formally acknowledges the significant contributions of volunteer emergency personnel, aligning tax policy with the broader goal of supporting and appreciating public service.

  4. May impact local recruitment and retention efforts. Local fire departments and ambulance services may find it easier to recruit and retain volunteers by highlighting this additional financial advantage, which could enhance public safety at the community level.
