What's happening
This bill waives the firearm license fee for retired federal law enforcement agents or representatives in New York State.
Why it matters
Expands an existing fee waiver. The bill extends the current waiver of firearm license and renewal fees—previously granted to various categories of retired New York law enforcement personnel—to include retired federal law enforcement agents or representatives, aligning state policy with the recognition of federal service.
Reduces financial barriers for retired federal agents. By eliminating licensing fees, the bill acknowledges the service of federal law enforcement retirees and may make it easier for them to legally possess or carry firearms in New York, potentially impacting their personal security and mobility.
Promotes parity among retirees. The change addresses possible inequities between retired New York State/local law enforcement and their federal counterparts, ensuring both groups receive similar benefits in recognition of their public safety roles.
May affect local revenues and administrative processes. Counties and municipalities could see a small reduction in fee collections, and licensing offices may need to verify federal retiree status, potentially adding minor administrative steps.
