What's happening

This bill exempts service awards, benefits, or allowances paid to volunteer auxiliary police members from New York State income tax.

Why it matters

  1. Incentivizes volunteerism in public safety. By exempting service awards and benefits for volunteer auxiliary police from state income tax, the bill could encourage more people to volunteer for these crucial roles, helping communities stay safer with a stronger auxiliary police presence.

  2. Provides financial recognition for unpaid service. Many auxiliary police members serve without pay; this exemption acknowledges their contributions by ensuring that any financial recognition they do receive isn't diminished by state taxes.

  3. Reduces administrative burden for volunteers. Volunteers receiving these awards or benefits will not have to navigate complex tax filings for them at the state level, simplifying their financial paperwork and potentially increasing participation.

  4. Sets a precedent for supporting volunteer emergency responders. If successful, this tax exemption could pave the way for similar benefits for other types of volunteer emergency personnel, highlighting the state's commitment to supporting all volunteer public safety workers.
