What's happening

This bill creates a research program to study health risks from potential toxins in feminine hygiene products and requires reporting of findings.

Why it matters

  1. Mandates investigation of a broad range of chemicals. not just dioxins, but also synthetic fibers, chlorine, fragrances, colorants, dyes, preservatives, and contaminants—found in all feminine hygiene products, not just tampons, potentially uncovering previously overlooked health risks.

  2. Focuses on both direct and generational health impacts. requiring research into how these products may affect users’ risks for a wide array of conditions (cancers, immune and reproductive disorders, infections), as well as possible effects on the children of those who used the products before or during pregnancy.

  3. Requires third-party validation of manufacturer claims. by directing state research to confirm data submitted to the FDA by manufacturers, increasing accountability and the chance of catching discrepancies or omissions in industry-reported safety information.

  4. Ensures transparency and public awareness. by mandating that findings, recommendations, and potential policy proposals are shared not only with state leaders but also made publicly accessible, empowering consumers and potentially shaping product standards or regulations.
