What's happening
This bill changes the coyote hunting season in New York to be open year-round starting after December 31, 2017.
Why it matters
Expanding the coyote hunting season to year-round could significantly impact coyote populations. potentially reducing their numbers, which may affect local ecosystems and the balance among predator and prey species.
This change could address concerns from farmers, landowners, and rural communities. who often cite coyotes as threats to livestock and pets, making it easier for them to manage coyote-related problems without seasonal restrictions.
By removing the state's authority to set a fixed season by regulation, the bill limits future flexibility. meaning that any future adjustments to coyote hunting periods would require passing new legislation rather than simpler regulatory updates.
The policy shift may have implications for wildlife management and conservation efforts. , including the roles of professional biologists and regulators who previously set seasons based on population data and long-term management goals.
