What's happening

This bill prohibits inspectors in New York from using live-streaming devices during inspections but allows recording for later review.

Why it matters

  1. Limits real-time oversight and intervention. By banning live-streaming during inspections, the bill prevents supervisors, experts, or third parties from observing inspections as they happen, potentially reducing transparency and the ability to immediately address issues or misconduct.

  2. Preserves documentation for accountability. Inspectors are still allowed to record or photograph evidence for later viewing, ensuring a record exists for review, appeals, or investigations, but without the immediacy and interactive nature of live feeds.

  3. Responds to privacy and security concerns. The prohibition on live-streaming may address worries from businesses or individuals about sensitive information being broadcast in real time, offering more control over the dissemination and use of inspection footage.

  4. May impact training and quality assurance. Without live feeds, opportunities for remote training, mentoring, or real-time quality control during inspections could be reduced, potentially affecting the consistency and thoroughness of enforcement practices.
