What's happening

This bill requires boards of elections to mail election notices and mandates media announcements about upcoming primary and general elections.

Why it matters

  1. Increases direct voter outreach. by requiring boards of elections to mail election date notifications to at least one registered voter in every household, thereby potentially reducing confusion and missed elections, especially among less-engaged voters.

  2. Mandates repeated reminders. by instituting two separate mailings before each election, with the second arriving no later than five days before voting, which could help combat forgetfulness or misplaced notices.

  3. Leverages mass media for civic engagement. by obligating all TV and radio stations using public airwaves or operating in New York to announce upcoming elections at least four times daily during peak hours for ten days prior, broadening election awareness beyond just those who receive mailings.

  4. Could improve turnout and public trust. by making election dates harder to overlook, addressing concerns about low voter participation linked to inadequate notification or last-minute awareness.
