What's happening
The bill requires affordable housing units in certain projects to be evenly distributed and have equal access to amenities, with possible waivers in large cities.
Why it matters
Prevents the physical segregation of affordable housing units. within new projects, aiming to reduce stigma and promote social integration among residents by requiring affordable units to be spread throughout buildings, not isolated to specific areas or floors.
Mandates that residents of affordable units receive the same access to amenities and communal spaces. as those in market-rate units, addressing concerns about "poor doors" and ensuring equal treatment in building facilities, which can improve quality of life and foster community cohesion.
Allows for local flexibility in large cities (population over one million). by permitting city councils to waive these requirements, which acknowledges that some projects may have unique constraints or local priorities, but also introduces the potential for uneven application of the law across different neighborhoods or developments.
