What's happening
This bill creates a grant program to fund and support sexual assault forensic examiners across New York State.
Why it matters
Expands access to critical care. By funding sexual assault forensic examiners, the bill aims to ensure that victims across New York State can access specialized medical and forensic support after an assault, regardless of location.
Addresses training and resource gaps. The grant program specifically focuses on providing examiners with the necessary training and resources, which could improve the quality, consistency, and sensitivity of care for survivors.
Supports legal processes and victim advocacy. Forensic examiners play a key role in collecting evidence that can be crucial for prosecuting sexual assault cases, so this funding could increase the effectiveness of the criminal justice response and strengthen victims' ability to seek justice.
Signals state prioritization of survivor services. By establishing this program in law and involving both the Department of Health and the Crime Victims Board, New York is formally recognizing the need for comprehensive support and infrastructure for sexual assault survivors.
