What's happening

This bill requires candidates to submit biographical statements and answers to issue questions, mandates voter guides and election postcards, and requires TV and radio election notifications.

Why it matters

  1. Increases voter access to candidate information. By requiring candidates to submit detailed biographical statements and positions on key issues, voters will have more comprehensive and standardized information to help them make informed decisions.

  2. Reduces information barriers and potential voter confusion. Mailing and emailing voter guides and election date postcards directly to registered voters ensures that critical election information reaches households, including those less likely to seek it out online or through other means.

  3. Promotes broader civic awareness and turnout. Mandating frequent election notifications on major TV and radio stations leverages popular media to repeatedly remind a wide audience about upcoming elections, potentially increasing participation.

  4. Modernizes and standardizes election communication. Requiring electronic submission and publication of candidate information, and maintaining a publicly accessible website, brings transparency and consistency to how voters access election details statewide.
