What's happening

This bill reallocates fire insurance premium taxes, giving 1% to the New York State Professional Firefighters Association for supporting paid firefighters.

Why it matters

  1. Directs fire insurance premium tax funds to support paid professional firefighters. , not just volunteer firefighters or institutions, thereby potentially improving resources, training, and benefits for career firefighters across New York State.

  2. Officially recognizes the New York State Professional Firefighters Association as a recipient of public funds. , which could strengthen their organizational capacity to advocate for health, safety, and labor standards for their members.

  3. Slightly reduces the allocation to the Firemen's Association of the State of New York from 10% to 9%. , potentially shifting resources and focus to the unique needs and challenges faced by paid fire departments, which often operate in larger urban areas with different risks and service expectations.

  4. Applies to all premium tax monies received after April 1, 2019. , meaning the change is ongoing and could set a precedent for future allocations or inspire similar legislative efforts in other states.
