What's happening

This bill requires the creation of a public, real-time online database showing available openings and waitlists at New York state veterans' homes.

Why it matters

  1. Increases transparency and empowers veterans/families. By making real-time data on bed availability and waitlists public, veterans and their families will have immediate, clear information to help them plan admissions, reducing uncertainty and confusion during stressful times.

  2. Promotes accountability and efficiency in state veterans' homes. With bed counts and waitlists updated in real time and visible to the public, the state must maintain accurate records and efficient admissions processes, potentially leading to improved management and responsiveness.

  3. Encourages inter-agency cooperation and technological upgrades. The bill requires the Department of Health and Division of Veterans' Affairs to work together and modernize data-sharing systems, which could lead to broader improvements in how state-run care facilities manage and share critical information.

  4. Could spotlight systemic issues and unmet needs. Publicly accessible data on waitlists and capacity may help advocates, policymakers, and researchers identify shortages or bottlenecks in veterans' long-term care, supporting calls for additional resources or reforms if chronic wait times are revealed.
