What's happening
This bill extends Steuben County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax through November 30, 2019, and updates allocation amounts.
Why it matters
Local governments in Steuben County, including the cities of Hornell and Corning, as well as various towns and villages, will see continued and slightly increased allocations from the additional 1% sales tax, which can help fund essential services and local projects.
The bill ensures that Steuben County can maintain its revenue stream from the extra 1% sales tax for two more years, potentially reducing pressure to raise property taxes or cut public services during this period.
The increase in annual payments to Hornell and Corning (from $765,000 to $780,000 each) reflects a recognition of rising costs and possibly greater needs in those cities, which could impact municipal budgets and local services.
By extending the sunset date for this tax, the state preserves stability and predictability in county and local government finances, allowing for more effective long-term planning and budgeting across Steuben County.
