What's happening

The bill updates deadlines for reporting on diversity efforts in New York State government workforce to the governor and legislature.

Why it matters

  1. Shifts reporting deadlines. The bill moves key reporting deadlines for diversity efforts from April to May and from April 1st to December 31st, potentially allowing more time for data collection and analysis, which can lead to more thorough and accurate reports.

  2. Extends oversight into the future. By updating the years referenced (from 2008/2009 to 2018/2019), the legislation ensures that the state government continues to monitor and address diversity issues rather than letting oversight lapse.

  3. Clarifies accountability. The bill emphasizes reporting not just on recommendations made, but also on which diversity actions have and have not been implemented, increasing transparency and potential pressure for follow-through on diversity initiatives.
