What's happening

This bill requires the New York State Board of Elections to create an online system for filing campaign finance disclosure reports without needing special software.

Why it matters

  1. Increases Transparency and Accountability. By making it easier for campaign finance reports to be submitted online, the public and watchdog groups can more readily access up-to-date information about political spending and donations, potentially reducing opportunities for corruption or hidden money in politics.

  2. Reduces Barriers for Candidates and Committees. Eliminating the need to download special software lowers the technical and financial hurdles for smaller campaigns or first-time candidates, making participation in the political process more accessible.

  3. Streamlines Compliance and Reduces Errors. Online, software-free filing can standardize how reports are submitted, reducing confusion and the risk of non-compliance due to technical difficulties, which may lead to fewer penalties and more accurate records.

  4. Modernizes State Election Infrastructure. By mandating an internet-based system, the bill pushes the Board of Elections to update its technology, potentially paving the way for additional digital services and improved efficiency in election administration.
