What's happening
The bill makes moving violations that cause serious injury or death a misdemeanor, with mandatory fines, possible jail, and safety course.
Why it matters
Elevates accountability for drivers. By making moving violations that cause serious injury or death a misdemeanor, the bill significantly increases the legal consequences for dangerous driving, aiming to deter reckless behavior.
Mandates both punitive and corrective measures. Offenders will face not just fines and possible jail time, but also be required to complete a motor vehicle accident prevention course, emphasizing both punishment and education to improve future safety.
Addresses a legal gap for victims. This measure responds to concerns that current traffic laws do not sufficiently penalize drivers whose violations result in severe harm, potentially offering greater justice and closure for victims and their families.
