What's happening

This bill allows towns to grant property tax exemptions to certain reserve veterans under the alternative veteran exemption.

Why it matters

  1. Expands local authority. The bill specifically empowers towns (in addition to counties, cities, villages, and school districts) to decide whether to grant property tax exemptions to reserve veterans, giving more local governments the option to support veterans in their communities.

  2. Targets overlooked veterans. By including reserve veterans who served under a specific 1970 executive order (Operation Graphic Hand), the bill recognizes a group that may have previously been excluded from property tax relief, addressing a gap in veteran benefits.

  3. Conditional on other requirements. The exemption isn’t automatic; eligible reserve veterans must have been honorably discharged and meet all other qualifications outlined in the existing law, ensuring the benefit is targeted to those who meet established service and conduct criteria.

  4. Immediate impact on future taxes. The act takes effect immediately, applying to tax assessments made after the next taxable status date, which means eligible veterans could see tax relief relatively soon after the bill becomes law.
