What's happening

This bill requires the New York City commissioner to order the removal of any large illegal sign and its structure after notice and hearing.

Why it matters

  1. Tightens enforcement. by changing the commissioner’s authority from being optional (“may”) to mandatory (“shall”) when it comes to ordering the removal of large illegal signs, ensuring consistent action across cases.

  2. Targets not just the sign but also its supporting structure. meaning property owners and advertisers must fully dismantle all components, likely increasing the costs and deterrent effect of violations.

  3. Mandates immediate action on previously identified illegal signs and structures. , potentially speeding up the removal process for longstanding violations and reducing visual clutter or safety risks in affected neighborhoods.

  4. Shifts the legal framework. from discretionary to compulsory removal after notice and hearing, which could reduce legal ambiguity and limit prolonged disputes over enforcement.
