What's happening

This bill requires all New York State Police vehicles to be equipped with automated external defibrillators and mandates related training.

Why it matters

  1. Faster emergency response. By requiring all State Police vehicles to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs), the law ensures that troopers can provide immediate life-saving assistance during cardiac emergencies, potentially increasing survival rates for people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest before EMS arrives.

  2. Expanded public safety role for police. State Police officers will be trained to use AEDs, equipping more first responders with critical medical skills and allowing police to serve as a frontline resource in health emergencies—not just law enforcement situations.

  3. Standardization and oversight. The bill directs the State Police superintendent to create rules for AED training and use, aiming to ensure consistent, effective deployment and proper handling of these devices across all troopers and vehicles.

  4. Potential cost and logistics impact. Outfitting every State Police vehicle with AEDs and maintaining ongoing training means an upfront and recurring investment, reflecting a legislative priority on public health and emergency preparedness.
