What's happening

This bill extends Albany County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax until November 30, 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Extending the additional 1% sales tax allows Albany County to maintain or potentially increase its revenue stream. , which can be crucial for funding local government services, infrastructure, and addressing budget gaps without raising property taxes.

  2. The bill ensures that the extra tax revenue is distributed among cities, towns, and villages in the same proportion as the existing 3% county sales tax. , maintaining fairness and predictability for local municipalities that rely on these funds for their budgets.

  3. There is a provision that suspends this revenue-sharing requirement if any city in Albany County enacts its own local sales tax under section 1224. , which could affect how much other municipalities receive and incentivize coordination between city and county governments.
