What's happening

This bill allows spouses of emergency medical technicians and advanced emergency medical technicians killed in the line of duty to receive awards similar to those for police and firefighters.

Why it matters

  1. Expands recognition and financial support to EMT and advanced EMT families. By including emergency medical technicians and advanced emergency medical technicians in the same category as police, firefighters, and transit police, the bill acknowledges the comparable risks they face and ensures their spouses or partners receive the same financial protections if killed in the line of duty.

  2. May improve morale and retention among EMS personnel. Extending these death benefits could help EMS agencies recruit and retain staff by demonstrating institutional support and valuing their service on par with other first responders.

  3. Addresses equity among first responders. The amendment corrects a previous oversight by treating all frontline emergency personnel equally regarding posthumous support for their loved ones, fostering a sense of fairness across the emergency services.

  4. Provides significant financial relief to survivors. The award is based on the fallen worker’s annual salary (with a minimum equivalent to a first-grade emergency worker), offering immediate and substantial assistance to families coping with the sudden loss of income.
