What's happening

This bill allows New York City police officers charged with crimes resulting in death or serious injury to be suspended without pay for an indefinite period pending determination of charges.

Why it matters

  1. Empowers the NYPD to suspend officers without pay for an unlimited time. if they are charged or indicted for crimes that result in death or serious injury, meaning officers in such cases would not automatically return to paid status after 30 days as previously required.

  2. Signals increased accountability for police conduct. by treating cases involving death or serious injury differently from other disciplinary matters, potentially strengthening public trust in the disciplinary process.

  3. Could have significant financial and legal impacts on officers. facing such charges, since loss of pay may last as long as criminal and departmental proceedings continue—sometimes months or years—before final resolution.

  4. Applies immediately and retroactively to pending cases. , meaning current investigations or proceedings could be affected, not just future incidents, which could influence ongoing high-profile cases.
