What's happening

This bill extends the expiration date for laws enforcing child support through the suspension of driving privileges from 2017 to 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Extending the expiration date allows New York to continue using driver’s license suspensions as a tool to enforce child support obligations. , which can provide a strong incentive for noncustodial parents to pay what they owe.

  2. This extension signals ongoing legislative support for linking key privileges (like driving) with parental financial responsibilities. , highlighting the state’s prioritization of child support collection over potential mobility or employment concerns for those in arrears.

  3. By maintaining these enforcement measures, the state may help ensure more consistent financial support for children and custodial parents. , potentially reducing public assistance costs and improving child welfare outcomes.
