What's happening

The bill requires testing for an incompetent cervix during pregnancy and fertility treatment, and mandates insurance coverage for such testing.

Why it matters

  1. Early detection of pregnancy complications. By requiring testing for an incompetent cervix during pregnancy and for women with a history of miscarriage or undergoing fertility treatment, the bill aims to reduce risks of preterm birth and pregnancy loss, potentially improving outcomes for both mothers and infants.

  2. Expanded access through insurance. Mandating insurance coverage for incompetent cervix testing ensures that cost is less likely to be a barrier, making an important diagnostic tool available to more women and promoting equity in reproductive healthcare.

  3. Standardizes care for at-risk women. The legislation sets a uniform standard for when incompetent cervix testing should occur, particularly for women with prior pregnancy losses or those pursuing fertility treatments, addressing gaps in current clinical practices and potentially leading to earlier interventions.

  4. Potential long-term healthcare savings. By identifying and managing incompetent cervix early, the bill could reduce the need for more intensive medical care associated with preterm births or pregnancy complications, leading to both better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs over time.
