What's happening
This bill amends property tax law to exclude environmental contamination as a factor in real property tax assessments.
Why it matters
Property values for tax purposes will no longer be reduced due to environmental contamination. , meaning owners of contaminated properties will be taxed as if the contamination does not exist. This could lead to higher property tax bills for those with polluted or brownfield sites.
Could discourage some property owners from reporting or disclosing contamination. , since the revelation of pollution will not offer them tax relief, potentially affecting transparency and remediation efforts.
May shift the local property tax burden. by increasing assessments on contaminated properties, which could impact redevelopment incentives and the financial calculus for cleaning up polluted land.
