What's happening

This bill extends the special powers of the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation until September 30, 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Ensures continued support for environmental projects. By extending the special powers of the Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), the bill allows the EFC to keep financing and managing critical water, sewage, and other environmental infrastructure projects, which directly impact public health and environmental quality.

  2. Prevents disruption of ongoing investments. Without this extension, any projects or financial agreements relying on the EFC’s special authorities could be jeopardized, potentially causing delays, increased costs, or loss of state and federal funding for local communities.

  3. Signals state commitment to environmental priorities. The extension demonstrates that New York remains focused on supporting municipalities and utilities as they upgrade outdated systems to meet modern environmental standards, which can improve water quality, reduce pollution, and support economic development.
