What's happening
This bill repeals section 735 of the New York real property tax law concerning small claims assessment review determinations.
Why it matters
Removes an avenue for property owners to challenge property tax assessments. Section 735 outlines the small claims assessment review process, which allows homeowners (often without an attorney) to dispute property assessments they believe are too high. Repealing this section could make it harder for individuals to seek property tax relief.
Could lead to increased costs and complexity for taxpayers. Without the small claims review mechanism, property owners may have to pursue more formal (and costly) legal challenges, which can be intimidating or inaccessible for many.
May reduce local government administrative burden. Eliminating this process could streamline workloads for local assessment review bodies, but at the potential expense of taxpayer fairness and access to simple dispute resolution.
